Dean Rostohar – Shinken kata vol 9 – Knife & Pistol / Fighting & Tactics

Dean taught us how to use the knife and pistol. How to carry them, how to draw them, how to use them against unarmed or unarmed opponent. He also taught how to defend against the same kind of attacks.

By learning how to use a knife and a pistol and getting to know how they can be used against someone, you also get a far better understanding how to defend yourself against these weapons. Dean taught us how to use the knife and pistol. How to carry them, how to draw them, how to use them against unarmed or unarmed opponent. He also taught how to defend against the same kind of attacks. These techniques is done with the knowledge and principles of what we learn in Bujinkan Budo-taijutsu from grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi Soke. Hatsumi Soke have asked Dean to teach us the real fighting principles from his experience as he see that many people in Bujinkan only play around without really understanding the true fighting principles that he teach. This seminar was organized in Stockholm, Sweden on 29th and 30th of October 2011.

About the Instructor

Dean Shihan has a lot of experience from real fighting in the independence war of Croatia, and also from his time in the police force. He was born 1965 and started training Martial Arts at the age of 10. He have experience from many martial arts styles but he was not completely satisfied with them until he found the warrior art – Bujinkan Ninjutsu/Ninpo Taijutsu. Elias taught Kihon Happou with Juppou Sesshou feeling. Dean talked about and taught basic principles in combat. Mats taught the Kunai Kata with help from Onni Koskinen and Ed. Thomas taught Taijutsu and Kunai. Ed taught ten breathing excercises and knife defense. Sveneric taught Bajutsu, Kunai and Sanshin no Kata. Lubos taught Kunai and Taijutsu. Michael Clysén taught Ten Ryaku no Maki techniques and Mariette did henka with the Kunai.

There was also a Q&A session, where the instructors talked about this years theme and much more.

Temat för detta läger är handhavande av Kniv och Pistol, självförsvar, taktik och teknik med mera. För fyra år sedan hade vi ett mycket uppskattat träningsläger med samma tema. Dean kommer att upprepa och bygga på det han instruerade förra lägret.

Dean var i Japan i September och tränade tre gånger om dagen med Hatsumi Soke och Shihan. Soke använde Dean som Uke varje träning för att låta honom känna den rätta känslan, det var mycket smärtsamt och givande. Soke gav också Dean ett diplom kallat “Bufu Ikkan”, detta är ett diplom som Hatsumi Soke endast delar ut till sina top elever. Soke bad Dean att instruera många gånger denna resa, och förklara för alla. Hatsumi Soke har sett värdet i de kunskaper Dean håller vid liv och ber honom att föra de vidare till oss andra som oftast tränar endast i en skyddad dojo. Detta var förmodligen också anledningen till att Dean fick denna utmärkelse.

Om lägret

Temat för detta seminarium kommer att vara SHINKEN KATA TAIJUTSU (verklig kamp), KNIV och PISTOL. Dean kommer att inkludera all sin erfarenhet och lära ut äkta Ninpo stridskonst från träningar med Hatsumi Soke i Japan, sin tid som Polis, som medlem av SJP Alpha och SPECWOG (SPECcial Warriors Operation Group) med mera. Det kommer onekligen bli ett fantastiskt läger, missa det inte!

Dean Rostohar from Croatia just returned from another trip to Japan. Hatsumi Soke asked him many times to teach a new technique for Soke to expand on. Soke almost always ask one of the most senior Shihan’s attending to teach the beginning technique. Soke asked Dean to do this many times this trip, he also did this many times in the past. What do you think this means? Why do Soke pick someone to demonstrate a technique that he can work on? I think he does this once or twice with most of the Shihan coming for a short training trip out of courtecy, he is a gentleman after all. But when he asks a particular Shihan more than a couple of times it must mean something else to, right?

So I think that when Hatsumi Soke asks Dean to teach a technique in practically all trainings that he attends, that Soke thinks that Dean have something important to teach and share.

I write this message because it is only one month left to our seminar with Dean Shihan, and we have so few people signed up, that I’m thinking about cancelling!!!

Maybe Soke didn’t say explicitly that you should go to his seminars. Many times people seem to be very bad understanding signs. Many people need things in writing, or a word to understand. It is actually what someone do that is important and have a true meaning. I think this is especially true for the Japanese culture and that we all should come to understand better.

…And now you have the chance to train with Dean for a whole weekend, don’t pass that by!

New Shinken Kata DVD with DEAN ROSTOHAR
Theme: YARI / NAGINATA / MUTODORI.

The theme of the seminar was traditional Japanese long Ninja weapons, Yari (spear) and Naginata (halberd). Kunren Shugyo in Japanese terminology represents the studying of training. Therefore the seminar participants have studied for two days, the ways, the principles, techniques and philosophy of combat with those traditional weapons we use in Bujinkan Ninjutsu.

The ways and techniques of fighting with long weapons are very important for understanding Taijutsu (unarmed combat), because this way we get to know our body and the possibilities of its use through combat techniques.

The techniques with Naginata were done on the first day of the seminar, while techniques with the Yari were done the second day. Also defence against several opponents, combinations with Naginata and sword, and unarmed defence against the Yari was taught.

In September 2009 Bujinkan Kaigōzan dōjō SSIF in Stockholm, Sweden hosted a seminar with Dean Rostohar, Shihan from Bujinkan Croatia.

First I would like to say thanks to Dean Rostohar for coming to us once again, this was the 4′th time we had him over here. Also special thanks to Davor, Hana and Ivica who travelled by car all the way from Croatia just to come here to train and assist their own teacher! Also big thanks to René coming from the Netherlands and Jukka coming from Finland. Also thanks to Tony for helping with transportation and stuff, and Johan for taking pictures and filming the seminar. Finally also thanks to the participants from Kaigozan Dojo, To Nan dojo, Solstaden Karlstad, Eskilstuna Bujinkan, Örebro Kampsportsförening and Berserk MMA.

This was a very good seminar where Dean taught and showed us many, many good and useful techniques and examples from his personal experience. First I felt quite ashamed that I couldn’t get more people interested enough to show up on the seminar. Then I felt pity for the fools that missed the chance to get really good training, what did you do this weekend that was so important? Seriously, I don’t want to hear all bad excuses, let’s leave it at that I’m sure you can convince me you had good reasons .

As always Dean teach from his big heart, you who have been to his trainings know what I mean. The first day he did techniques based on the first technique Ichimonji from Kihon happo kata. But it was different than what he showed before, more realistic and useful. Although he never said that the basics is bad to know or practice, but the basics is basics to teach students a foundation to build up on. When you know the basics well you combine each basic movement to the situation, and it comes alive. You do what you have to do to benefit from the situation. He showed many different taijutsu techniques this weekend.

In the afternoon training Dean and his students from Croatia showed many interesting techniques and team tactics how to work in a group, everything from quickly climbing up over a wall, or in to a window. How to take out a guard and many other examples how to work as a team.

The second day Davor started by showing and teaching his excellent taihenjutsu skills, he did some of the best taihenjutsu moves I have ever seen. He was rolling smoothly and silently like a cat moves, very nice! Then Dean taught more taijutsu techniques from Kihon-happo. Then later on he showed us how to train up the sensitivity, and then he moved on to some sword techniques. Finally he showed and explained to us how to train while blindfolded.

Now it is less than a week until the Ninpo/Ninjutsu Seminar with Dean Rostohar. Here is some updates and news…

Dean is coming on Friday already, but we have no extra training planned. Dean is also bringing some of his top students with him this time, so I’m sure they will also help him with the teaching. This will be an exciting seminar, he will teach lot’s of stuff we usually don’t see in the trainings in a regular Bujinkan Dojo.

• Place: We booked the dojo. We will be in Kaigozan Dojo on Sveavägen 130 in Stockholm city (here is the map).
• Saturday training: We open the dojo after 10:00, the training start at 11:00 and finish at 18:00 with a longer lunch break.
• Saturday evening: As usual we want everyone to join us for dinner at a local restaurant, if you don’t hear about this by e-mail we will inform you about it Saturday morning.
• Sunday training: we start at 11:00 and finish around 15:00. We do not have a longer lunchbreak, so prepare yourself with something to eat during the short breaks.
• Late people: if you haven’t signed up for the seminar do so immediately, or look at the web site first to see if there is places left before you come.
• Seminar fee: One day training is 500 SEK, for both days 850 SEK. We suggest that you sign up and pay early next time to get the discount!
